AUTUMN -
The Hating Tree
Songs: 11 Time: 65:48
Autumn is
a new gothic trio from the heartland…Minnesota. The Hating Tree,
their Tess Records debut, is an album that adds some life to the semi-stagnant
gothic genre. Much like their regional surroundings, Autumn’s sound is pure and
refreshing. Julie’s vocals range from soothing, deep tones to higher octaves
when she wishes to add emphasis to her delivery. A perfect example of this is
on the album opener, How It Came To Be. Neil’s echoing guitar chords are
the perfect compliment to Julie’s vocals, adding both texture and cohesiveness
to each composition. The songs range from slower, melodic pieces (…Of
Moondrop Tears) to more upbeat pieces (Desert Winds of Jezebel.)
Even though the pace of each track may waver, Autumn have devised and
maintained an overall stable sound on The Hating Tree. Resurrection has
a wonderful build-up that gradually leads into a sonorous piece in which the
listener is treated to every aspect of Julie’s vocal range, including the
breathy delivery of several lines. After listening to this album several times,
I get the feeling that Autumn were influenced by a great number of bands.
Likeness’ range from The Cure to Siouxsie and the Banshees but
without ever entirely cloning their sounds. The Hating Tree is reintroduces
that special ambiance and atmosphere that many modern goth bands lack making it
a invigorating listen from beginning to end.
