Artefakto's
latest, Interruptor, is quite a change in style from their
previous two full lengths. Time breeds ingenuity and ingenuity spawns novel
ideas. Concentrating more on overall song structures and less on danceability,
Artefakto have created a release that is both intelligent in sound and creative
in style. Interruptor begins with Overcome, a trance / electro hybrid
that fuses together drifting sequences, subtle guitars, strong beats, and gruff
vocals. This piece is not hard -n- heavy industrial madness, but rather a
lighter approach to electro with enough variation in sounds to please both the
laid back listener and the frenzied dancefloor monster. Sumisión takes
over where Overcome leaves off and continues to carry the same style onward.
Again, the backing guitars are restrained to a minimum and the thick sequences,
rigid rhythm, and cloppy beat remain as the joint driving forces. With a
stronger / faster beat, heavier rhythmic elements, and more aggressive vocals,
Codes may initially seem like an aggro-industrial track, but if you play
close attention to the smooth backing sequences you will realize how they hamper
the aggressiveness and downplay the harder elements. This is executed so
superbly that it may take several listens before you realize it. Switcher
is a laid back piece with some synth-poppy sequences added in with trippy
beats and effected vocals. With its spacey syrth samples and liquid-like
sequences, Poder is the highlight of this CD. The beat slowly grows into
the track and continues to branch out into different areas with different
sounds. A hearty rhythm sprouts up amidst the electro symphony and soon becomes
the central backbone of the track. Laslty, Narcolepsia is a noise tinged
instrumental that, according to the liner notes, was mixed live by Modula 3.
This track differs from the remainder of the CD in that it seems to have less
structure and cohesiveness and tends to wander through a wide range of sounds
and styles, including mad break-beats and harsh noise. If I were asked to place
Artefakto in a category with similar musicians I would have to say that they'd
fit nicely between Freeze Frame Reality era Haujobb and
more recent Evils Toy. Not that Artefakto is a carbon copy of either of
the aforementioned bands, but there is definitely something about their style
that is similar. Interruptor is highly recommended!
