ANDROID LUST - Resolution

I knew that the female electro revolution was underway, but I thought it would be quite some time before we saw a release entirely created by a woman, but in December 1997 one such album was released.  Android Lust is a one woman band, whose sole member is Shikhee.  Resolution is an intense electronic album of exceptional magnitude.  Mixed in with the agitating electronics we find subtly soothing melodies and dark vocals.  Shikhee’s approach to electronic music parallels the Euro scene in that she doesn’t rely on the hard and heavier aspects of her pieces, but rather a combination of them and the lighter, more melodic portions.  What drives the album home is the wide array of sounds and atmospheres she creates within each piece.  On pieces such as Cruelty and Refuse Shikhee’s vocals are swept beneath the music, surfacing every so often, but never allowing them to act as a singular driving force.  Heathen is an especially interesting piece which is presented in three forms; the original version, the Witch’s Hammer version, and A Thousand Thoughts version, the later two which have been altered by the forces behind Oneiroid Psychosis.  On the original version we find a solid beats, a dense rhythm, and spaced-out electronics.  On the Witch’s Hammer version Leif Hansen adds a wet sound to the rhythm and also pushes it more towards the front of the mix.  Lars Hansen takes a more melodic approach to his A Thousand Thoughts mix by substituting the rough rhythm with the airy sequences and Shikhee’s whispered vocals.  Of all three mixes this one is the creepiest.  Used is a twisted piece which intertwines many elements including samples of a baby crying and the buzzing of flies, barley audible vocals, and a militaristic styled beat.  The US seems to be catching on to the Euro formula of electronic music and Android Lust is one of the first to attempt to bring that sound to this side of the Atlantic.
